The Evolution of the Lifting Platform

The Evolution of the Lifting Platform

The traditional above-ground weightlifting platform is slowly becoming a thing of the past. As more high schools, colleges, and professional strength and conditioning facilities renovate or build new spaces, many are moving away from the classic elevated platforms in favor of inlaid platforms. These platforms, which are level with the surrounding flooring, offer a more seamless and aesthetically pleasing design. In addition to the cleaner look, this approach also eliminates tripping hazards and can enhance the overall functionality of the training space.

The Rise of the Inlaid Platform
Inlaid platforms are quickly becoming the standard, particularly in newly constructed or renovated facilities. Along with this shift in platform design, many strength and conditioning coaches are incorporating the Perform-X Trak-X system—a custom metal strip installed between the lifting area and the drop zone. This system can be included as part of the initial flooring installation in new builds or retrofitted into existing facilities, depending on the type of flooring already in place.

Advantages of the Trak-X System
The Trak-X system offers several advantages, especially in terms of safety and versatility. It allows for secure anchoring of resistance cords, enabling a wide range of exercises, including classic strength training movements such as squats, bench presses, deadlifts, and Olympic lifts. These movements are enhanced by what we call the Strength Cord Systems.

One important note: The placement of the inlaid platform relative to the lifting rack may influence the use of resistance cords for exercises like squats and bench presses. Some facilities leave a gap between the platform and rack, which can impact the positioning of cords.

In addition to supporting traditional strength training exercises, the Trak-X system and inlaid platform also offer the flexibility to double as a plyometric jump station. The Jump-X System has quickly gained popularity because it offers a compact, cost-effective alternative to larger, more expensive jump training equipment that is typically used in commercial settings.

Expanding the Possibilities with Resistance Cords
Beyond strength and power exercises, the combination of the inlaid platform and Trak-X system opens up opportunities for more functional training. Coaches and athletes can utilize various Perform-X resistance cords, such as the Speed-X lower body system for dynamic movements, the Hip-X 360 system for targeted hip strengthening, and even the Ult-X upper body cord for pushing, pulling, pressing, and rotational exercises.

A Versatile Training Solution
In summary, the trend in modern athletic facility design is clear: the inlaid platform is here to stay. When paired with the Perform-X Trak-X system and resistance cords, it creates an incredibly versatile training station, ideal for developing strength, power, and overall athletic movement.

Retrofit Existing Platforms
If your facility currently uses above-ground platforms, there’s no need to worry. The Trak-X system can also be retrofitted into these existing platforms (see the related blog below for more details). Feel free to contact us for more information.
